Since the Natural History Museum first opened in 1881, more than a quarter of a billion visitors have walked through the doors to marvel at its contents. The most visited natural history museum in Europe and the 11th most visited museum in the world, it welcomes over five million visitors each year. It is home to more than 80 million specimens, an irreplaceable record of the planet’s astonishing diversity.
A world-renowned scientific research centre it has over 300 scientists whose research is contributing in the global fight to save the planet from the major threats of climate change and biodiversity loss. Its purpose is to inspire a love of our natural world and unlock answers to the big issues facing humanity. The Museum uses its enormous global reach and influence to meet its mission to create advocates for the planet - to inform, inspire and empower everyone to make a difference for nature.
